Coach Karin believes that through hard work anyone can be the best version of themselves in all aspects of life.  She strives to help everyone realize they are capable of doing the same. She finds satisfaction being able to help others get to their potential through coaching and mentoring.  

As a former cheerleader she strives to encourage those around her. Before Crossfit she found a loss in motivation to go the gym, even with Coach Pete's encouragement. When she found Crossfit, her desire to attain physical achievement was renewed.

 “I first started going to the gym in High school when I was competing as a Track and Field Athlete. In the gym I was only doing the common exercises and movements (ie Curls, Bench Press, running on the treadmill etc.) just trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. After competing in High School as an Elite Pole Vaulter I moved on and joined the United States Marine Corps, still going to the gym trying to maintain my healthy life style but I always felt something missing. I notice I had no competitive atmosphere and nothing pushing me to be better. Then, In Spring of 2009 I was introduced to multiple programs to boost fitness scores for the Marine Corps; one of those programs was CrossFit. My mentor in the Marine Corps shadowed and guided me to train properly in CrossFit movements and lifts to prepare myself for fitness tests, training and future deployments. Among other programs CrossFit has helped me not only better myself but it has helped me develop traits and characteristics that are crucial and essential in the Marine Corps and in Life. I have held multiple leadership positions as a Fire Team Leader, Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant and Section Head because of my attitude, judgment, and commitment I have demonstrated and developed through my training. CrossFit has changed the way I look at working out and my way of life forever.”

Like most CrossFitters, my first WOD—a 12 minute AMRAP I still remember to this day—left me totally out of breathe, curled up in the fetal position at 12:01, and questioning just how “fit” I thought I was. But like so many who give CrossFit a try, I was completely hooked. What I found even more addictive and amazing about this sport is the sense of community and pride that comes along with it, but especially at CrossFit Royalty. It didn’t take long at all for me to recognize CrossFit’s and CrossFit Royalty’s ability to transform bodies and minds alike, and I immediately wanted to be a part of the outstanding coaching staff at Royalty so I could try to do for others what CrossFit and Royalty had so quickly done for me. 

The way I approach coaching is this: the L1 certificate is not an instant right to be a coach, nor does it make someone a good coach; it simply educates one about CrossFit’s foundational principles, core movements, and philosophy toward fitness and wellness. In my opinion, the opportunity to be a good CrossFit coach starts after the L1, and involves a great deal of hard work, practice, dedication and continuing education. CrossFit’s inclusiveness of multiple fitness styles, its deep culture of learning, and results-driven philosophy allow even long-time CrossFitters the ability (and responsibility in the case of coaches) to learn something new every day and in turn make themselves and, perhaps even more importantly, those around them better.

My goal every time I coach is to promote an environment that allows the best possible experience and outcome for each of our members. Whether that results from instructing proper form, offering that “ah-ha! moment” cue for someone struggling with a movement, or encouraging an athlete to push past their comfort zone and PR a workout, it all starts with hard work and a passion for wanting to learn to be a better coach. Whether it’s your first WOD or 1,000th, the coaches at CrossFit Royalty are dedicated to making each workout one that gets you on your way to your goals.

I wrestled and trained for boxing while I was growing up. My love for health and fitness grew from there. I’ve had the opportunity to work with a wide range of people in many types of fitness classes all while studying Exercise Science & Wellness. CrossFit brought an aspect to my own training that redefined the way I thought and moved on a daily basis. Fitness is no longer something that is achieved by just going through the motions aimlessly. Each day, each wod, and each rep is an adventure. I aim to share this feeling with our members and help them discover what they really are capable of. My favorite part about Royalty, is that when someone walks through the doors for the first time, it’s not about defining yourself by where you stand, it is about where you are going and the journey along the way.

Growing up I was always involved in sports. This led me lacrosse, where my passion for competing began. I was constantly at practice or doing what I could to be a better player. My four years at college were dedicated to being the best athlete, player and teammate I could be. So as you could imagine, after graduating, I was lost. I began doing the only things I knew how to do.  I found myself walking around the gym doing common lifting exercises and running, but it just wasn’t the same. After discovering CrossFit in the summer of 2013, I was HOOKED. The competitive atmosphere was what I had been missing, but bonus, it was fun too! The benefits I have experienced from CrossFit are inexpressible. The greatest of these benefits I have gained is the family I have made here. Being a coach here at Royalty has been the most rewarding experience of my life. Seeing the progress that each and every member makes on a daily basis is beyond inspiring. The encouragement from both members and coaches pushes us all past what we thought possible. This is what keeps us coming back every day.

I learn every day, get better every day, and I have fun doing it. And that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?

I've considered myself an athlete my entire life. I grew up playing every sport I could, from swimming to basketball and eventually fell in love with baseball. As I became more focused on sports, I took my training more seriously. When my playing career came to a close, I did what I could to remain competitive. I continued to train at the local YMCA, ran 5ks and the occasional half marathon, played in local social sports leagues - I considered myself in "good" shape. I was reluctant to try CrossFit, because I thought my personal training plan was solid. After starting my CrossFit journey a little over 2 years ago, I was immediately hooked -- the supportive community, the team-like atmosphere, the competitive flare, took my training to the next level. My philosophy is that everyone who walks in the door deserves quality coaching and a welcoming environment to achieve their personal goals. The biggest improvement I've seen in myself and others is when there is an emphasis on mobility and form and not just putting up big numbers. My goal every day I walk in the gym is to work hard, have fun (this includes a little dancing), and push myself (and those around me) to be the best that I can be!


Jay has his PhD in Chemistry from Penn State University and his BA in Chemistry from LaSalle University and works in the pharmaceutical services industry. When Jay is not at the gym, he enjoys hanging out with his best buds -- his wife, Joy and dogs, Vinny and Coco.

Nicole Courtney has been a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) since 2001.  She holds a BS in Athletic Training from West Chester University and a MS in Sports Management from Neumann College.  She has cared for and treated injuries sustained by athletes at all levels including youth sports, and high school and college athletics.  Nicole is available twice a week to members of CrossFit Royalty for any advice and guidance regarding stretching or injury prevention, as well as therapeutic exercise for any acute or chronic conditions or Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (commonly referred to as “scraping”).
